Racquet Club East

Following the success of The Alexander Construction Company in creating Twin Palms in the fifties, George and his son began a development in North Palm Springs to accommodate those with a more modest income; they named it Racquet Club Estates, now called Racquet Club East. The first houses, completed in 1959, were designed by William Krisel. He designed these homes relatively small at 1225sq.ft. to be used as weekend getaway and vacation homes. These homes also feature post and beam construction, open floor plans, to create that indoor/outdoor relationship which is really what living in the desert is all about.

An interesting part about Racquet Club East is that Krisel designed all the houses with the same basic floor plan, but with 2 different orientation choices and five different roof styles from which to choose, thus giving an individual feeling to each one. Over time, it’s said that the most iconic roof line has come to be the “butterfly” (or the variant “half-butterfly”).

When newly built, Racquet Club homes were priced at $19,000. Now they sell at prices from $300,000 to $500,000 or more. These homes have enjoyed a resurgence of interest in recent years and are much in demand. There is a very active neighborhood association.
