Palm Springs Rolls Out New Enticements

June 20, 2012 by Frances Sakowicz Leave a Comment

“A Youth Serum for Palm Springs,” proclaimed the New York Times in last Sunday’s June 17th edition. They went on to laud the newest hotel and restaurant arrivals in Palm Springs.

With the installation of trendy shops for art, clothing and antiques along with new hip restaurants, Palm Springs rolls out new enticements, especially in the Uptown Design District which has become a lively destination in the last few years. Then last summer, our Downtown welcomed the instantly successful restaurant Lulu to the corner of Palm Canyon and Amado, where the neighboring Zin, not to be outdone, reconfigured to create an inviting outdoor dining terrace, and the Kaiser Grill across the street joined in with its own makeover.

So this past Sunday when the Times pronounced South Palm Springs newly chic with the arrival of  its new hotels and restaurants, it seems we’ve now gotten all our bases covered. The Ace Hotel moved into the former Howard Johnson a couple of years back, bringing a new vibrancy to the South End, and they do seem to keep perennially booked. The Ace offers lots of incentives for guests – a welcome policy for pets, taco parties by the pool, film festival parties and great concierge services. And next door, Koffi – long an institution in North Palm Springs, opened their second location, in a sparkling white building where they serve up the same great coffees and paninis. But that’s not all. The developers of the Ace Hotel cast their eyes on the drab green-painted Holiday Inn at the corner of Palm Canyon and Sunrise Way, a few blocks down. Now they’ve transformed it into a hip and vividly colored hotel that’s all the buzz and christened it The Saguaro. The Times called the Ace our “first hipster nightlife hub” and now the Ace’s creators have given us a second “hipster hub” with their opening of The Saguaro.

The Times goes on to list some little jewels of shops like Mr Cox, for vintage clothing, and also recommends our very newly opened restaurant, Jiao on N. Palm Canyon Drive in a corner of the Corridor Shops. The owners of Jiao had already opened their wildly popular Cheeky’s, and then Birba, just a few blocks up. In the new Jiao, they serve up their own twist on Asian fare, with the experience enhanced by their art installations and musical entertainment. It’s on my list!

Palm Springs once again has transformed herself into a chic weekend retreat, and for those of us who live here year round, it’s all good! See A Youth Serum for Palm Springs for details.

College of the Desert West Valley Campus in Palm Springs

November 28, 2011 by Frances Sakowicz Leave a Comment

It’s tremendously exciting for our community that Palm Springs and College of the Desert are collaborating on the development of the new College of the Desert West Valley campus here in Palm Springs. Back in 2004, voters approved Measure B, a bond issue of $346 million, which includes a mandate for development of an east and west Valley campus. Then in 2007, Palm Springs was chosen as the location for the West Valley Campus. In 2010, a tract of 119 acres in north Palm Springs, located on the northwest corner of Indian Canyon Drive at Tramview Road, was acquired by Palm Springs from the Bureau of Land Management and transferred to the College of the Desert.

Construction has now begun for Phase 1 which includes the infrastructure for the entire site. Already some classes for this campus’ curriculum are being held here in rented space. The construction of Phase 1 will bring hundreds of new jobs to Palm Springs, as will the campus itself when it opens at the Phase 1 completion in 2014. In addition, new support services will undoubtedly develop around the campus, and more will come as the remaining three phases are developed. Along with new jobs, the new campus will bring a young demographic, injecting new vitality into the greater Palm Springs area.

West Valley Campus of College of the Desert
The West Valley Campus curriculum will focus on four main disciplines – Hospitality and Tourism, Media and the Arts, Allied Health, and Sustainability Technology. Roughly half of the acreage will be devoted to a GreenPark for sustainable energy-generating systems. The campus is being constructed utilizing green technology to the extent that it will be totally self-sustaining from its inception and will even generate energy surpluses to sell back into the grid. Sustainability needs for our desert environment will only become more important as we move into the future. It’s the aim of Palm Springs leadership to develop a green economy and to attract clean technology companies to our city. The collaboration between the City of Palm Springs and the West Valley Campus of College of the Desert will be a powerful catalyst for future development here in Palm Springs.

Measure J Passes and Palm Springs Revitalization Gets a Boost

November 12, 2011 by Dick Sakowicz Leave a Comment

Measure J passes and Palm Springs Revitalization gets a boost. This is great news for our city! I am writing today as a followup to my recent blog on Measure J and the potential it represents for the long delayed revitalization of Palm Springs, especially for the downtown, to begin. Don’t expect the bulldozers to start tomorrow, but a really important step was taken on November 8 with the passage of Measure J.

In spite of the noise from detractors of Measure J because it is a tax increase, oh my! To them I say, this is government operating at its best. It demonstrates that a local government/private sector partnership has the power to fix a local problem. We can see that some revitalization has already begun with the recent investment in new restaurants, new shops and galleries. Now our Palm Springs politicos have found a way to energize and empower us to go forward with the revitalization process of Palm Springs in a big way. This process has been delayed for years, due to lack of funding. Congratulations to all who have worked to make this important first step a success. For all of us citizens of Palm Springs, we thank you for your efforts!

Now let’s get to work and make our dreams of a Palm Springs revitalization come true!

Retro Palm Springs in the News

July 12, 2010 by Dick Sakowicz Leave a Comment

A recent New York Times Travel Section article on July 4, 2010, entitled 12 Unexpected History Trips, features a visit to retro Palm Springs. If you are nostalgic about the good old days in the 40’s and 50’s when Palm Springs became the Playground of the Stars, the article gives you a list of places you must go to capture the feelings of that era, to feel those vibes!

First, plan a stay at the Orbit In (notice that the innkeepers spell the name of their inn with only one I), then grab a cocktail and dinner close by at Melvyn’s, located in the Ingleside Inn, where Frank Sinatra and his “rat pack” often hung out. They made Palm Springs their “getaway from LA” home. Melvyn’s is still very much what it was when Sinatra and his pals celebrated there and continues to offer dancing nightly. If you are planning a visit to Palm Springs soon, check out the whole article at Retro Palm Springs, (click forward to 4th page where Palm Springs is featured). Our great weather and proximity to Los Angeles continue to be a big draw for stars and others alike.

Ten Days of Modern Love in Palm Springs

February 11, 2010 by Frances Sakowicz Leave a Comment

Billed as 10 Days of Modern Love in Palm Springs, the fifth annual Modernism Week begins this Friday, the 12th (with a preview party on Thursday night) and runs through the February 21st. The Festival has grown steadily each year and has recently been featured in such publications as TIME.com, LATimes.com, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and many others.

Amongst the 45 special events taking place during the festival, three especially caught my eye –
1) A world premier screening of a film about architect Bill Krisel’s career and legacy of Alexander homes that he designed during the 50’s.
2) A Celebrity Home Tour of homes belonging to Frank Sinatra, Frederick Lowe, Dinah Shore, Peter Lawford and concluding with a reception at the Elizabeth Taylor Estate.
3) A retro exploration of foods from the 1950’s and 1960’s put on by Chef Jonny Vee with Victoria Price, daughter of Vincent Price.

Of course, the annual Modernism Show and Sale will be back at the Convention Center as a part of the opening weekend, February 12-14, and the classic car show returns later in the week. Amongst the new offerings will be a Vintage Fashion Show and a show of those archetypical silver bullet-shaped Airstream Trailers.

To read about all events and to purchase tickets, go to Modernism Week. It’s all très chic!

Palm Springs Modernism Week 2009 – A Celebration of All Things MOD!

February 7, 2009 by Dick Sakowicz Leave a Comment

The 4th annual Palm Springs Modernism Week 2009 kicks off this coming Friday, February 13, 2009 and will include a wide variety of events over a 9-day period. As in previous years, Modernism Week will begin with the two-day Modernism Show on February 15 and 16, preceded by an evening Preview Reception on the14th, held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Eighty dealers of decorative and fine arts objects will offer a vast collection of modern furniture, jewelry and clothing and other items of the period.

Modernism Week 2009 features architecture tours, films, lectures, parties, a vintage car show, and many other activities to be held in various venues throughout the City of Palm Springs; all are offered as an homage to the ideals of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture. The style, which originated in the late 1940’s and continued to the mid-1960’s, is typified by clean, simple lines that celebrated an elegant informality and came to define desert modernism. Palm Springs is blessed in having the largest concentration of such mid-century homes and condos in our country, perhaps in any country. So this festival is a celebration and affirmation of one important element of Palm Springs that makes our city so special.

Modernism Week is the only such event in the country celebrating the aesthetics of modernism over such an extended number of days, thus making it appealing for aficionados to plan their vacations to coincide with the event. As a result, Modernism Week has established a passionate and enthusiastic following of  fans who now literally number in the thousands, and who come from all around the country and the world to Palm Springs for the event.

Numerous renowned architects such as Richard Neutra, John Lautner, William Krisel, Albert Frey and others designed Palm Springs’ stellar examples of modernism, inspired by the Coachella Valley’s desert topography and climate. From around 1940 to the early 1960’s, these men helped to create in Palm Springs one of the most important concentrations of modernist architecture in the world. For the full schedule, visit Modernism Week.
